It seems that a lot of startups in Pittsburgh are not using the internet to communicate to new media. They have websites, but fail to use them to their fullest potential. This makes it hard for people like me to find the information I need.

In the next few weeks I hope to change that. I am going to start a web series about how you can communicate better to new media outlets. I am going to break it up into three posts.

  1. Press Releases / RSS – This will be about how you can take the PR you are already doing and make it easier for new media types to find and use it.
  2. Business Blog – A lot of people do not think a business blog is important. In this post I will convince you otherwise.
  3. Social Media – I will share with you my thoughts on when startups should and shouldn’t take part in social media. It’s not for everyone.

I would like to point out that I am not an expert on New Media, but I do have a lot of experience. I would be skeptical of anyone that calls themselves an expert. New media changes so fast that what is a good idea now, can be a bad one in just a few weeks.

To keep information in our posts helpful to everyone, please comment with any questions or suggestions you may have. That way everyone can benefit from the added information.

As many of you know I write for another blog call, MrBaconpants. Well around the same time I started this blog was the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival. I had a lot of obligations to help promote and setup the event. Then when I came back a horrible tragedy struck close to home and…

What I am trying to say is this site is now sitting on the back burner.

I would like to be able to move it to one of my front burners but I don’t have the resources at the moment. My bacon blog, my day job, and helping my friend, are taking claim to my front burners. I would greatly appreciate it if one of you would lend me a helping hand with getting this site up and running. I need content.

I am able to write content but I need a jump start. All I would need is an idea or story summery. Then I could flesh it out in to a post. You can also just send me guest posts (150 words) and I will publish them with a byline.

I know a lot of people were excited about this site, but life gave me a big plate of the unexpected to come to terms with. Just give it time and with your help Startup Pittsburgh is going to be a great success.

A New Startup about Startups

by Jason Mosley on February 5, 2009

in Blog

Startup Pittsburgh is a blog that will profile and review local startups. It was created because Pittsburgh is a hot bed of innovative startups that no one knows about. That’s right, very few people that live and work here know that these companies exist. Even when they make it to mainstream status, people still don’t know that they are based in Pittsburgh. This blog will change that. We will profile startups and keep you informed as they grow.

The goal of this blog is to show everyone that Pittsburgh is the place for ideas. A secondary goal is to promote the companies and ideas that make this region so exciting.

If you are a local startup, add us to your email list editor [at] startuppittsburgh.com. If you are a fan of business then we suggest you add this blog to your bookmarks or feed reader.
